?    How do you become an EMT?

Answer:  The first step is successful completion of the First Responder (EMT Part I) course.   Second step is successful completion of the EMT Bridge (EMT Part II) course. 

 

?   How long is the First Responder Course (Part 1)?

          Answer:  The First Responder Course is 48 hours. 

 

?  How many hours of class can you miss in a First Responder course?

          Answer:  No more than 4.5 hours.

 

? How long is the Bridge Course (Part ll)?

          Answer:  The Bridge Course is 78 hours.

 

?  How many hours of class can you miss in a Bridge course?

          Answer:  No more than 8 hours.

 

 

The First Responder and the Bridge follow a semester schedule.

The EMT Bridge may be taken at anytime after successful completion of the First Responder course.

 

 

? What is taught in the First Responder (Part 1) course?

          Answer:  This course is an introduction to emergency care training covering subjects of human systems, cardiac arrest, bleeding and shock, soft tissue injuries, musculoskeletal care, emergency childbirth, lifting and moving patients, and ambulance operations.   Successful completion of the First    Responder enables students to take the PA written and practical exams for First Responder.

 

?  What is taught in the Bridge (Part ll) Course?

          Answer:  This course builds upon the knowledge and skills learned in the First Responder (Part l) course as well as covering additional information in the subject area of medical emergencies and pharmacology.   The First Responder will also learn to assist the patient taking the following drugs:  glucose for diabetics; fast acting inhaler for asthmatic; nitroglycerin for cardiac patients and epinephrine auto-injector for severe allergic reactions.   Successful completion of the Bridge enables students to take the PA written and practical exams required for EMT certification.
