Phase 2: Smallpox Vaccine Plan
In order to protect emergency medical services personnel against the threat
of smallpox, the Pennsylvania Department of Health has initiated Phase 2 of
the Smallpox Vaccination Plan, vaccination of emergency responders. Follow
THIS LINK to a letter from Margaret E. Trimble, Director, Emergency Medical Services Office inviting your
participation.
It is important to realize that a service’s willingness to participate in
Phase 2 begins a process of education and screening programs. It does not
commit any service or individual practitioner to complete the immunization
process.
There is no limit to the number of services in the region that may
participate and it is NOT restricted to ALS services or practitioners. BLS
services and practitioners are essential components in our EMS system.
Many of you have the resources to make copies of this information to
provide to your employees. We are also in the process of making additional
packets. If you need additional packets, please contact our office with the
number needed and they will be mailed to you. Each of your personnel that may be interested
in receiving the Smallpox vaccine must receive a complete packet of
information.
As you review this information, you will undoubtedly have many additional
questions related to implementation issues. The Phase 2 education programs
will provide opportunities for discussion and answers to your questions.
Please remember that participation in Phase 2 does not commit your service
to participate or any of your personnel to receive the vaccine.
To facilitate the sign-up process, we have developed a form to collect the
information requested by the Emergency Medical Services Office. Only those
services interested in participating should return this form. Click
HERE to go to the form.
