SAEMS and MRC Search Help

1.) What, if any, wildcards are supported?

Yes, wildcards are supported.

An asterisk (para*) will find paramedic or paramedics. A question mark (p?) will find PA or PM; or (med????) will find medical or medicine. Use double quotes to search for an exact phrase, such as: "Pre-Hospital RN".

2.) What does "Results per page:" mean?

There is a dropdown box next to "Results per page:". The number you select, either 10, 20, 50, or 100, is the number of results you will be shown. Ten is selected as the default. If you select 10 and there are 25 results, after the last result, you will see: Result Pages: 1 2 3 Next » You can click through the pages to view all of your results. Or, you could select 50 results and all of your results will appear on one page.

3.) What does Match: "any search words?" and "all search words?" mean?

To match "any search words?" you would click in that radio button and your results will show for each word you entered. If you searched for: Paramedic EMT, your results would show you pages where Paramedic or EMT appear.

To match "all search words?", the default position of the radio button, and your results will show if each word you entered appears. If you searched for: Paramedic EMT, your results would show you pages where both Paramedic and EMT appear.

4.) What are Categories and how do I use them?

This site, www.saems.com, has four search categories: All (for all pages on this site); SAEMS (for Southern Alleghenies EMS Council, Inc. pages); MRC (for Medical Reserve Corps pages); and, PDF Documents (for all Adobe pdf documents, regardless if they are specific to SAEMS or MRC.)

5.) What does "Refine your search by category:" mean?

If you select All from available categories (the default), your results will include SAEMS, MRC, and PDF documents. It will show you how many pages were found for each of the other three categories. If you'd like, you can refine your search by category by clicking on a specific category. It will be shown something like this, where the categories are clickable hyperlinks: SAEMS (5) MRC (2) PDF Documents (1). The number in parentheses are the number of files found within that category.

6.) What does "Sorted by relevance / Sort by date" mean?

You can sort your results by relevance (page weight and selected by default) or by date (the date the file was last updated.) Pages are weighted according to the title of the page, keywords, header text, and content. The higher the score, the higher it will be listed in your results.

7.) What does the gray text next to the linked search result mean [All] [SAEMS] [MRC] [PDF Document]?

The text in brackets next to the search result indicates the category the page was found in.

8.) What does all the blue text under the linked search result mean?

The link itself is the title of the page. The blue text under the linked search result contains part of the content from the actual page.

9.) What does all the gray text under the linked search result mean?

The gray text beneath the blue content text indicates five parameters: 1.) the number of terms matched on the page; 2.) the page's score from page's weight (number seven above); 3.) the date the file was last updated; 4.) the file size; and, 5.) the actual url of the page.
